AI Max for Search is a setting inside Google Search campaigns that lets Google’s AI expand targeting beyond your keywords and build ad assets automatically. It matches your ads to more relevant searches using broad match technology, keywordless signals, final URL expansion, and text customization.

In practice, you still run a Search campaign. AI Max just gives that campaign more room to find converting searches and assemble the headline, description, and landing page for each auction.

## AI Max overview

AI Max is Google’s AI expansion layer for Search. When it is on, your campaign can:

- serve beyond your added keywords, including queries with no exact keyword match
- send traffic to the most relevant page on your site, not only the final URL you set
- customize ad headlines and descriptions to the search and landing page
- learn from your conversion data, website content, and ad assets together

It is built for advertisers who want broader coverage from Search without building hundreds of keyword and ad variants by hand. The trade-off is control: you get more reach, but you need clear guardrails, exclusions, and conversion tracking to keep it on qualified intent.

For a longer breakdown of URL expansion, broad-match AI, and when to enable it, see our [AI Max guide](https://groas.com/post/google-ads-ai-max-the-only-guide-you-need).

## Is AI Max a campaign type in Google Ads?

No. AI Max is not a separate campaign type like Performance Max or Demand Gen.

It is a setting you turn on inside an existing or new Search campaign. Your budget, bidding, location targeting, and conversion goals stay at the campaign level. AI Max only changes how Google finds searches and builds assets within that Search campaign.

That distinction matters. If someone says “AI Max campaign type,” they usually mean a Search campaign with AI Max enabled.

## How AI Max works: targeting and asset optimisation

AI Max has two halves: where your ads can show, and what your ads say.

### 1. Expanded search matching

With AI Max on, Google can match your campaign to searches beyond your keywords, using:

- broad match intent from your keywords, ad groups, and assets
- keywordless signals from your landing pages and site content
- user intent signals from the current search

This is closest to the query “ai max google ads asset optimisation” on the targeting side: you supply creative direction and intent, Google finds additional relevant queries.

Use brand controls, negative keywords, and location intent settings to keep that expansion relevant. Without them, informational or irrelevant searches can spend.

### 2. Final URL expansion

Final URL expansion lets Google send the click to a different page on your domain if that page better matches the search.

For example, a search for “emergency drain repair” can go to your drain-repair service page even if the ad group points to your general plumbing page. You control this with URL exclusions for pages you never want as landing pages, such as careers, thank-you, or login pages.

### 3. Text customization and asset optimisation

Asset optimisation in AI Max means Google automatically adapts your headlines and descriptions to the search and landing page.

You still provide headlines, descriptions, images, and business information. Google then assembles and tweaks combinations, prioritizing assets most likely to convert. Review asset performance ratings and search terms regularly, pin only where you must, and keep core offers and proof points in your own assets so automation cannot dilute them.

## AI Max example

Say you run Search for a home-services business with the keyword “water heater installation”:

- Standard Search: your ad mainly shows for close variants you keyworded, and sends clicks to the final URL you set.
- Search with AI Max enabled: your ad can also show for “replace 50 gallon gas water heater same day” with no exact keyword, send the click to your water-heater page instead of your homepage, and rewrite the headline to “Same-Day Water Heater Installation” to match the search.

Same campaign, same budget. The difference is broader matching, smarter landing page choice, and a headline tuned to that search.

## How to enable AI Max in Google Ads

You enable AI Max at the campaign level in Google Ads:

1. Open the Search campaign you want to expand.
2. Go to Campaign settings.
3. Find AI Max for Search and toggle it on.
4. Confirm text customization and final URL expansion settings.
5. Add guardrails: brand inclusions or exclusions, URL exclusions, negatives, and location settings.
6. Check conversion tracking is measuring qualified outcomes, not page views alone.
7. Launch, then review search terms, landing pages served, and asset performance in the first 1-2 weeks.

If you are starting from scratch, create a Search campaign first, then turn AI Max on during setup. Do not expect a separate “AI Max campaign” option in the campaign-type picker — look inside Search settings.

## What to watch before you turn it on

AI Max rewards businesses with clear sites and clean tracking, and punishes vague ones:

- Thin or duplicate service pages lead to poor URL expansion choices.
- Weak conversion actions teach the system to chase the wrong outcome.
- No brand controls can invite competitor or irrelevant brand traffic.
- No reporting cadence lets waste hide inside broader match.

Start with one Search campaign, set exclusions up front, and expand only after search terms and cost per qualified conversion look stable.

Where groas fits: groas runs Paid Ads, SEO and AI Search as one, around the clock, with results tracked daily. That model exists because ad auctions change 24/7 while most teams can only check in periodically — the same capacity gap that makes settings like AI Max either useful or wasteful, depending on guardrails and follow-through.

## Pay For Results, Not For Hours

Businesses buy the outcome, agencies resell it, and groas answers for it either way.
